Comments: My Dad servedon HMS Opossum. Not too sure when but I know he receives your newsletter. Unfortunately he is dying from Mesothelioma which he contracted through his naval service. He does talk fondly of his service. His name is John Blair and he lives in Girvan

Comments: Served on HMS Opossum in 53/54. The Captain was Cdr J E Wilmot who was an excellent captain and I am very proud to have served under him. I was in the forr'rd messdeck when we had the tip of our bows taken off in foggy conditions by a merchant vessel. I looked out of a scuttle to see what was going off but I soon backed away when I saw the vessel across our bows, we were in formation with other RN ships at the time. I think it was during these repairs that a Bullring was fitted to the bows. When we payed off we flew from Penang in Malaya on Aguilla Airways Short Solent Flying boat, City of Funchal. Taking eight days before landing in Southampton Water, landing in daylight hours each night.
